Designing a wooden deck involves careful consideration of several key elements, from the layout and size to the materials and features incorporated. Here are some important aspects to keep in mind when planning the design of your wooden deck:
1. Space and Layout:
Evaluate the available space in your backyard and determine the best layout for your deck. Consider the size and shape of the deck and how it will fit within your overall outdoor living area. Think about how you intend to use the deck and how it will flow with the rest of your outdoor space, including any existing structures or landscaping.
2. Deck Shape and Levels:
Choose a deck shape that complements your home's architecture and suits your needs. Common shapes include rectangular, square, or multi-level decks with various corners or curves. Multi-level decks can add dimension and visual interest, creating separate areas for dining, lounging, or other activities.
3. Materials:
Selecting the right materials for your wooden deck is crucial for both aesthetics and longevity. Popular wood choices for decks include cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated lumber. These woods offer natural beauty and durability. Alternatively, composite decking materials provide low maintenance options that mimic the look of wood without the need for regular staining or sealing.
4. Railing and Balusters:
Consider the style and functionality of your deck's railing and balusters. Railings are essential for safety, so ensure they meet local building codes. Traditional wooden railings provide a classic look, while metal or glass panels offer a more contemporary feel. Baluster options range from simple vertical wooden pickets to decorative metal or glass designs, allowing you to customize the appearance to match your preferences.
5. Lighting:
Incorporating appropriate lighting within your deck's design can enhance both safety and ambiance. Consider adding post cap lights, stair lights, or deck surface lights to illuminate the space and create a warm and inviting atmosphere during evenings. Solar-powered options are eco-friendly and require no electrical wiring.
6. Seating and Amenities:
Depending on your intended use, integrate seating options that suit the style and size of your deck. Built-in benches or planters can save space while providing comfortable seating. Add a pergola or a retractable awning to create shade and protect against sun and rain. Consider including amenities like an outdoor kitchen, fire pit, or a hot tub, if space allows, to elevate your deck's functionality and entertainment potential.
7. Landscaping and Privacy:
Incorporate landscaping elements around your deck to blend it seamlessly with the surrounding nature. Potted plants, flower beds, or trellises with climbing vines can enhance the aesthetics. If privacy is a concern, explore options such as lattice screens, decorative paneling, or strategically placed shrubs and trees to create a sense of seclusion.
Remember to consult local building codes and regulations, obtain necessary permits, and consider hiring a professional contractor or architect, if needed, to ensure your deck design is structurally sound and meets all requirements. With careful planning and attention to detail, your wooden deck can become a stunning focal point of your outdoor oasis, providing endless enjoyment for years to come.
PDSI designed this beautiful outdoor deck for a proud client in Ontario. This double story deck provides a scenic view from the ground floor level of the house also acts as a spacious pergola to the tenants living in the walkout basement. The customer is delighted with the design and aesthetic appeal of his dream deck and enjoys his quality time on it with family.
PDSI visited the site and discussed the requirements of the client in detail. We measured the site dimensions and listed down all the points related to design challenges in this project. The client's requirement was to get a deck covered with roof on top. The span of deck was 16' (length) x 12' (depth) along with only two support at the ends. We took the project and designed the required deck asper the client's satisfaction.
Permit from the municipality
We successfully designed the deck according to engineering standards and as per the O.B.C 2012 code. The deck's engineering was impressive as we managed to design it with a steel frame and only two end-supports. To provide an unobstructed view of the rural scenery, we used pressure-treated wood for the floor and installed a glass railing. The deck had a height of approximately 9 feet and featured an attached roof that matched the exterior brick of the home, giving it a masonry look. We also obtained the necessary permit from the city without any issues. The design was approved on the first attempt, and the entire permit application process went smoothly, ensuring utmost satisfaction for our client. Now, both the client and their tenant can enjoy the deck during the summer season.
